See Why the New Ford F-150 Lightning Outshines the New Rivian R1T in Layton, UT

Ford has been making pickup trucks for over 100 years, and our F-Series models have been the best-selling vehicles for much of the past decade. Electric vehicles (EVs) are on the rise lately, and Ford has answered the challenge with the new Ford F-150 Lightning. This fully electric full-size truck has plenty of muscle and utility, while releasing zero emissions. The new Rivian R1T is another fully electric pickup with a lengthy range, however, it doesn't offer as much utility or as many infotainment features as the F-150 Lightning. Ed Kenley Ford has created the following comparison of the two trucks to show you why.

Design and Capability

Payload Volume and Capacity

Ford knows that people in Ogden, UT sometimes carry furniture, boxes, or construction supplies in the back of their truck. That's why the new Ford F-150 Lightning comes with a 5.5-foot bed and a payload capacity of up to 2,235 pounds. Available in-box LED lighting and exterior zone lighting make it easier to keep an eye on your load.

The new Rivian R1T only has a 4-foot-6-inch bed. Its maximum payload capacity is just 1,760 pounds.

Front Trunk (Frunk) Space

Since EVs don't have gas engines under their hoods, they often have a front trunk (frunk) that you can use to stow handbags, tools, or road trip supplies. Syracuse, UT drivers will appreciate that the new Ford F-150 Lightning has a 14.1 cubic-foot frunk that opens like a regular trunk for simple on-loading and offloading.

The new Rivian R1T has an 11 cubic-foot frunk that won't hold as much. It also opens like a chest freezer, making it more difficult to access stored items.

Interior

Passenger Room

The new Ford F-150 Lightning is only available in a crew cab with two rows and five seats. There's ample space for even taller Clinton passengers to get comfortable because it has 43.6 inches of back seat legroom.

The new Rivian R1T also comes in a two-row, five-seat cab style only. However, its rear seats are set upright, which can make them uncomfortable on long trips. Additionally, the Rivian R1T only has 36.6 inches of second-row legroom.

Infotainment System

A feature-rich, easy-to-use infotainment system makes your ordinary commute in Clearfield, UT more interesting. The new Ford F-150 Lightning comes with the latest SYNC®4 infotainment technology. This includes a 12-inch touchscreen and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Its base system also has helpful physical knobs to operate functions such as climate control.

The new Rivian R1T has a 16-inch touchscreen. However, it doesn't offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto smartphone connectivity. Nearly all the R1T's cabin functions are controlled via the touchscreen, which can be distracting while driving.

Price

The new Ford F-150 Lightning's entry-level trim costs around $13,000 less than the Rivian R1T's base model. It's much easier for most Layton drivers to fit the F-150 Lightning into their budget than the R1T.
