The 2023 Ford Lightning EV: It's A Brave New World

The Ford F-150 Lightning for 2023 is a muscular blend of the familiar and the groundbreaking. The F-150 Lightning is a full-size pickup that's rugged enough to impress buyers in Ogden and Syracuse UT with its unique approach to life. It was named the 2023 Truck of the Year by the editors at MotorTrend and we think it's worth consideration just on that basis alone. Here's an overview of what you can find in the new Ford F-150 Lightning truck at Ed Kenley Ford in Layton UT.

The powertrain

Every Ford F-150 Lightning model comes with all-wheel drive and provides the same three-phase permanent magnet AC motor at the front and rear. In other words, all F-150 Lightning models come with two electric motors that are powered by one of two battery packs. With the larger Extended-Range battery, the Lightning powertrain gives you an attention-getting 580 horsepower and the F-150 Lightning can do a sizzling zero-to-60-mph time of just 4.0 seconds.

Driving range and charging time

The 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning can travel 240 miles when it's using electric power only. That's quite a bit below the 483 miles of driving range you can get in a gas-powered Ford F-150 with a 23-gallon tank. You should also be aware that, if you invest in a 220-volt outlet at home, it will take buyers in Clinton and Clearfield UT about 14 hours to charge the new F-150 Lightning. We understand these numbers will concern some buyers but want you to be aware of this reality and assure you that Ford is working on improving these numbers in the future.

Trim Levels

The Ford F-150 Lightning comes with a total of six trims to choose from:

  • Pro
  • XLT
  • Lariat
  • XLT Extended Range
  • Lariate Extended Range
  • Platinum Extended Range

Be aware that the price of the Ford F-150 Lightning has jumped quite a bit from last year which is why you might find comfort in the mid-level XLT Extended Range trim. It will come with a long list of attractive features including adaptive cruise control, a Pro Power Onboard generator, heated front seats and steering wheel, in-dash navigation and a power-operated tailgate.

EV Motor and Performance

Every version of the F-150 Lightning comes standard with two electric motors and all-wheel drive. If you choose the Standard Range battery, you'll get 450 horsepower and with the Extended Range battery, horsepower bumps up to 580. Maximum torque is a remarkable 775 pound-feet either way. The Ford F-150 Lightning Platinum model can reach 60 mph in just 4 seconds.

Towing and payload capacity

The official maximum towing capacity for the F-150 Lightning is 10,000 pounds which is substantially lower than the gas-powered Ford F-150 and only the optional Extended Range battery models can pull that off. Standard Range battery Lightning trucks can pull only 7,700 pounds. That's almost exactly the same as the gas-powered Ford Ranger so if towing is important, you might want to look at a gas-powered Ford F-150 with 13,000 pounds of towing. Lightning payload gets up to 2,000 pounds which barely beats the Ford Ranger's best.

The Interior and Cargo

The new Ford F-150 Lightning is offered only as a Crew Cab with a 5.5-foot bed. A 12-inch touch screen infotainment system is standard but you can upgrade to a bigger 15-inch display.
